The Bangkok Skytrain Getting around central Bangkok can be a time consuming exercise. As most people will know Bangkok is frequently gridlocked and journeys by car or bus, of only 1 or 2 kilometres, can sometimes take 30 minutes or more! A good way to travel around the main areas of the city is by the BTS, or Bangkok Skytrain. It has been operating since the end of 1999 and is an electric, overhead railway, that will speed you on your travels very efficiently. The trains are air conditioned and very frequent. Ticket prices are very reasonable and excellent value. The railway runs above main roads and has stations every few kilometres on its route. Some of these stations have walkways leading to major shopping complexes or hotels. Most of the stations have small retail outlets providing snacks, food, mobile telephones, ATMs cash dispensing, and more. The system has its own security guards who are smartly dressed and efficient at what they do. So when you are in Bangkok try to use it and help reduce the congestion and pollution in the city.
