Litter Police In Bangkok, Thailand

Many tourists visiting Bangkok, the Capital of Thailand, are not aware of the 'Litter Police'. These so called police officers are located at tourist spots and concentrate on one thing only - litter dropped by tourists and the revenue they can generate from it!

They can be spotted sitting in small huts watching tourists through large openings in the walls. Or hiding behind street vendors, hoardings etc. They wear brown uniforms and look similar to normal police officers.

But wherever they are, they have one thing in common, they are watching the hands of tourists hoping that they will see a cigarette butt, sweet paper (however small) drop to the ground.

An unsuspecting tourist faces an on the spot fine of up to 2000 Baht (approx 30 GB pounds, or 60 US dollars) if they are caught depositing litter.

If the culprit co-operates, laughs and apologises, the fine will be much lower.

If the culprit protests their innocence, or argues in anyway, the fine will be the full 2000 Baht. In bad cases of disrepecting the officers, and I have seen this, you go to jail.

If you do get caught, laugh, apologise, pay up, and move on. Make sure you get an official receipt for what you pay ! It is not worth the trouble of protesting innocence or that the cigarette is biodegradable etc.

The main areas they operate are near Sukhumvit Soi 11 ( Nana area ) and near the Emporium shopping centre near Sukhumvit Soi 24 ( Phrom Pong area )
